Ancient remains found over a century ago in a lavish crypt in Chaco Canyon, considered to be "the richest burial known in the Southwest", has shown new evidence of a matriarchal dynasty.
Found in Room 33 in Pueblo Bonito, these remains were accompanied by turquoise jewelry, shell beads, pendants, musical instruments and pottery, and spanned 330 years. In 2017, mitochondrial DNA sequencing showed that they were all directly related and all were traced to one maternal ancestor. This is evidence of a ruling or elite class, where power and privilege is passed down from mother to daughter.
